Monroe Lawrence’s glitchy, stilted lines touch everything from the quotidian to the sublime while coated in a strangely generous self-consciousness. “Nice,” pulls its reader along a constellation of urgent, bizarre, and heartening moments, where “The rotted / lies of life have sounded” and yet “it is too sickening to be hateful.”
Lawrence was born and raised on the unceded Coast Salish territories of Canada (Campbell River and Squamish, BC).
